Howard Stern Signs on to America's Got Talent!

Howard Stern Signs on to America's Got Talent!

America's Got Talent's got Howard!

Howard Stern has signed a deal to join the judges' panel on America's Got Talent, he announced Thursday morning on his Sirius XM radio show.

PHOTOS: Howard's personal wedding photo

Stern, 57, said that the Los Angeles-based NBC talent competition will move the production to NYC to accommodate the acerbic shook jock, who lives in the Big Apple with wife Beth Ostrosky.

NBC then confirmed the news -- including the NYC move -- in a statement.

PHOTOS: His most outrageous moment ever?

"Howard Stern's larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to America’s Got Talent starting this summer," NBC exec Paul Telegdy said. "He's a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success."

PHOTOS: Biggest reality TV bombshells of the year

Back in November, rumors floated that Stern was nearing a $15 million deal to sit alongside Howie Mandel and Sharon Osborne, replacing the departing Piers Morgan.

"I would be an excellent judge," he said at a premiere of the rumors. "After all, I’ve had a 35 year career. I've made stars out out people like Ronnie the Limo Driver and Eric the Midget," he said, referring to people he has featured on his radio show. "I would be good because I would mentor and show people the way."

Barbara Walters declares Steve Jobs Most Fascinating of 2011

Barbara Walters declares Steve Jobs Most Fascinating of 2011

Steve Jobs: Gone, but still making headlines. Barbara Walters has declared the late Apple Inc. co-founder the Most Fascinating Person of 2011.

Barbara Walters has declared late Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs the Most Fascinating Person of 2011.

Jobs, the mastermind behind tech gizmos like Apple's Macbook, iPod, iPhone and iPad, died in October after an eight-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 56.

"All his life, Steve Jobs could see things other people couldn't see," Walters said during her annual TV special, The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011, which aired on ABC Wednesday night.

Is a Steve Jobs movie in the works? >>

The 90-minute special highlighted some of the year's most prominent names in entertainment, sports, politics and business and how they've solidified themselves as toast-makers in the eyes of the veteran newswoman.

This year, Walters took note of Jobs. She championed the down-to-earth mogul, who dropped out of college and launched the Apple brand in his parents' suburban San Francisco garage in 1977.

"He embodied qualities you rarely see in one person," she said.

"It's hard to imagine there ever being anyone quite like him again. He was a computer geek and a visionary, a romantic and a businessman, a Buddhist and a marketing genius. He was the smartest person in the room since childhood. He always thought he was right and he almost always was," Barbara added.

Babs is one of many Americans "fascinated" by Jobs. A biography about the former Apple CEO was Amazon's best-selling book this year, despite only hitting store shelves and electronic readers in late October.

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, which went on sale on Oct. 24, less than three weeks after Jobs' death, topped the list of Amazon top-selling books for 2011.

"Even though it was published in October, the sales have been phenomenal in both formats," Chris Schluep, Amazon's Senior Editor of Books, said on Monday.

Walters' list of the year's most fascinating people also included the Kardashian family; Modern Family stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet; talent show honcho Simon Cowell; royal sister-in-law Pippa Middleton; New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter; business magnate Donald Trump and pop star Katy Perry.

Cheap shot: Jessica Biel's brother slams Justin Timberlake

Cheap shot: Jessica Biel's brother slams Justin Timberlake

Timberlake, take cover! Jessica Biel's kid brother is defending his sister's honor…by trash-talking her ex-boyfriend on YouTube!

Jessica Biel's brother is apparently frustrated with the actress' famous ex.

In a new video rant heating up the blogosphere, Justin Biel accuses Justin Timberlake of being a bad businessman, who is single-handedly ruining their potentially lucrative Tequila brand, 901 Silver.

Biel -- who up until a few weeks ago worked for Justin Timberlake's Tequila brand -- posted a profane monologue  about the singer online Wednesday.

"The Other Justin" claims that the company is going broke because Mr. "SexyBack" is too busy attending Marine Corps Balls and shooting romantic comedies with Mila Kunis to actually promote the drink.

Jessica Biel on Justin Timberlake: "A girl doesn't kiss and tell" >>

Looking as though he's been knocking back some of the product himself, Biel yammers on for nearly five minutes about what a crappy boss Timberlake is.

"I've been waiting for [Timberlake] to do something with this f--king brand," Biel rants. "Make a song about it, put it in a g-d-mn video. Hold it up, take some pictures. I don't care -- just do something because we're dying on the mother---ing vine here!"

The rant continues with Biel suggesting a number of alternative selling points, including,

  • "901 Tequila ... Mixes well with a bump of cocaine"

  • "901 Tequila ... Steve Jobs used to drink it…Oh man, that's too soon.
"
  • "901 Tequila ... I only s--t my pants once on it."

  • "901 Tequila ... So g-d-mn exclusive, our own CEO doesn't even drink it."

Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel inseparable at GQ party >>

A rep from 901 told TMZ that the video was "intended to be one in a series of videos created by 901 Tequila employees as part of a larger viral marketing campaign slated for the end of December. It was released prematurely without our knowledge and prior to the final edit."

Meanwhile, Justin Biel has pulled what we affectionately like to call "a Miley Cyrus."

He took to his Facebook page overnight to alert us "knuckleheads" that what we're seeing in this very NSFW video isn't douchebaggery.

It's the Biel Family acting gene at its finest.

"For all you knuckleheads that haven't figured it out. This is just a joke. hahah. Got ya," Justin wrote.

Golden Globe nominations 2012: The Artist makes a major splash

Golden Globe nominations 2012: The Artist makes a major splash

• The Artist tops nominations with six
• The Help and The Descendents trail with five each
• Moneyball and Midnight in Paris, The Ides of March and 50/50 clock up more nods that expected, while Hugo and War Horse disappoint with two apiece

The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius's largely silent black-and-white homage to Hollywood's golden era, has swept the board at the Golden Globe nominations, picking up nods in all major categories.

The Help, a civil rights era drama came in joint second with five nominations, equalling The Descendants, Alexander Payne's Hawaii drama starrring George Clooney.

My Week with Marilyn picked up three nominations, likewise Albert Nobbs and Hugo, Martin Scorsese's first foray into family films - and into 3D - which had been tipped to fare better.

Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris picked up four nominations, as did The Ides of March, written by and starring George Clooney. Ides star Ryan Gosling picked up an unexpected best actor (drama) nomination for his work in the thriller, as well as a nod in the comedy category for his work in Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Leonardo DiCaprio won a best actor nod for his portrayal of J Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's biopic, as did Michael Fassbender for Shame. Other surprise (but welcome) acting nods went to Jodie Foster for Carnage and Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin.

At a stop-start ceremony at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California, actors Rashida Jones, Sofia Vergara, Woody Harrelson, Gerard Butler – as well as the daughter of Andie Macdowell – announced nominations in 25 film and television categories.

In the animated category Tintin, Arthur Christmas, Cars 3, Rango, Puss in Boots, went forward for the big prize. Screenplay nods went to Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, as well as The Ides of March, The Artist, The Descendants and Moneyball, while The Artist, W.E., The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, Hugo and War Horse picked up soundtrack nominations.

The Flowers of War, In the Land of Blood and Honey, The Kid on a Bike, A Separation, The Skin I Live In were nominated in the foreign language category.

Morgan Freeman will receive the group's Cecil B DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

The Golden Globes are voted for by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 85 entertainment reporters for overseas outlets. The organisation has suffered from some negative publicity in recent years, and their reputation as a reliable indicator to the Oscars has faltered. Only one top Globe recipient has gone on to claim the best picture Oscar during the last seven years. Earlier this year, the Globes drama winner The Social Network was beaten by The King's Speech at the Academy Awards, repeating the trick of 2010, when Globes winner Avatar was trounced by The Hurt Locker.

This year, pundits suggest that the popular and critical acclaim for the likes of The Artist may mean the Globes get back on track as an awards ceremony with real clout.

The Globes will be presented in a ceremony on January 15, hosted for the third time by – in the words of the Globes president – "naughty, naughty schoolboy" Ricky Gervais, whose appearance last year ruffled feathers but was deemed enough of a ratings winner for him to be invited back. The Oscars nominations follow on January 24.

More details to come …

Duggars show photos of baby Jubilee at memorial service

Duggars show photos of baby Jubilee at memorial service

A memorial service was held Wednesday for Jubilee Duggar. Along with words of mourning the family shared photos of the baby Michelle Duggar miscarried earlier in the week.

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar

Photos of Jubilee Shalom, the baby Michelle Duggar miscarried, appeared online just hours after the reality television family held a memorial service in her honor.

One of the black and white photos, shared by gossip site TMZ, shows a pair of incredibly tiny feet held between Michelle Duggar's fingers. Writing accompanying the image reads, "There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an imprint on this world."

A second photo shows Jubilee's entire hand resting on just the tip of her mother's finger, along with the message, "Michelle holding Jubilee's hand!"

Rumor has it the photos made their way from being openly shared at the Duggar memorial service to the Internet via Amy Duggar, a relative of the family often featured on the show.

RadarOnline reports Jim Bob, patriarch of the family featured on TLC's 19 Kids and Counting, had this to say at Jubilee's memorial service:

"We won't be able to see this child's life and the phases that we've seen for our other children, but we know we will see this child in heaven one day. We are thankful for each child, and we are blessed to have the children we have here and the ones we will meet someday in heaven."

Amy Duggar spoke previously about Michelle's miscarriage of the family's 20th child, saying, "We know the Lord is in control. We're very thankful that He has helped us before and we know that He will help us again."

In regards to the public criticism the Duggar family has faced over their large family size and apparent willingness to ignore concerns for Michelle's health, Amy commented, "We know that there was a reason for Michelle's miscarriage. We're not listening to the criticism. We won't let it affect how we react to it."

“I love her more than life itself," she added of Michelle Duggar. "She needs time to grieve. They need time to hurt as a family.”

Simon Cowell wanted to get it on with Paula Abdul

Simon Cowell wanted to get it on with Paula Abdul

Simon Cowell said he considered getting it on with Paula Abdul -- but thought the fantasy was probably better than reality.

Simon Cowell Paula Abdul

We always thought there was a lot more behind the perpetual bickering of The X Factor judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul than meets the eye. Turns out we were right, and that thing is incredible sexual tension.

On Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People Wednesday night, Cowell said he considered taking Abdul to bed -- but quickly reconsidered.

Simon Cowell is all a-Twitter >>

"We didn't like each other in the beginning," Cowell said, adding, "I think it was sexual tension -- on her part."

"That she really wanted you?" Walters asked.

"A million percent," Cowell said.

"What happened? Did you want her?" Walters asked.

"I considered it," Cowell admitted. "But then I thought, 'I don't think the after would be as good as before.'"

Simon Cowell: Rachel Crow's X Factor elimination was "ridiculous" >>

Of course if it had happened, don't think Cowell would have cuddled afterwards.

"I'd let her stay for a few hours, but then it would have to be, 'Good night,'" he said.

Lest his judging table partner think he was just messing with her, Cowell offered this reassurance for her ego: "If you're watching Paula, it is true," he said.

Eh. She could do worse.

Cowell and Abdul first met while preparing for the first season of American Idol in 2002. Abdul has been married twice, to Emilio Estevez from 1992 to 1994 and fashion designer Brad Beckerman from 1996 to 1998. Her relationship with restaurant owner J.T. Torregiani ended in 2008. Cowell has been engaged to makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy since February 2010. No wedding date has been set.

Argh! Even Movie Studio Employees Pirate!

Argh! Even Movie Studio Employees Pirate!

Well aint that some sh*t!

Looks like the people fighting piracy are doing it themselves! Well, by representation anyways...

Employees from major movie, tv, and music studios have been caught illegally downloading the tv series, new albums, unreleased movies, etc!

For example, an employee at NBC Universal was caught with the entire first season of Game of Thrones. And a Fox employee had Super 8!

What do U think about this, perezcious readers??

Eurozone crisis live: Spanish bond auction reassures

Eurozone crisis live: Spanish bond auction reassures

European stock markets bounce back while Asian shares enter bear market territory

Spanish bond auction goes well
UK gilt auction sees lacklustre demand
UK retail sales disappoint in November
Eurozone poised for 'mild' recession
China manufacturing PMI still contracting

Live blogging now: Julia Kollewe

12.20pm: Our man in Rome, Tom Kington, has this:

He stood up to the ambitions of Microsoft when he was EU competition commissioner, but Italian prime minister Mario Monti appears to have found his match in Italy's taxi drivers, who have long resisted moves to liberalise their profession, as anyone who has tried to find a cab in Rome or Milan when it rains will testify.

Against expectations, Monti has failed to insert measures to add more taxi licenses into his austerity budget, which faces a confidence vote in the lower house on Friday, raising doubts over his will to free up Italy's closed shop brand of capitalism.

That is a problem for Monti since one of the reasons Silvio Berlusconi lost all credibility with the EU was his utter failure to tackle Italy 's powerful trade lobbies.

After Democratic Party leader Pierluigi Bersani said he was "stupefied" by the lack of liberalisation measures, Italy 's trade minister Corrado Passera promised on Thursday that the government would continue to tackle the issue , but admitted "It is a very difficult world, where resistance is insane."

The Northern League party is meanwhile doing its part to hold up Monti's program of tax hikes and pension cuts. After waving banners against taxes at Monti in the Senate yesterday, two League MPs were ordered out of the lower house today after insults flew.

12.09pm: The view from Berlin: Britain is on its way out from the EU, believes Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the leader of Germany's opposition German Social Democrats. After Cameron's EU summit veto last Friday, Steinmeier opined: "I fear that this is the crucial step for a withdrawal of Britain from the EU."

The falling value of the euro dominates the financial press, along with news that US investors are withdrawing billions from European, including a large number of German, banks.

The financial daily Handelsblatt has an interview with Hans Redeker, chief currency strategist at Morgan Stanley, who predicts a difficult future for the euro, and explains why its value will drop to $ 1.20 by the summer as investors pile into dollars. It dipped below $1.30 this week after the ECB lowered interest rates for the second time this year. But Redeker thinks that a break-up of the eurozone is "very unlikely" for political and economic reasons.

11.07am: More UK data: manufacturers saw the biggest drop in factory orders in more than a year, mainly due to weaker exports. The CBI's industrial trends survey showed the orders balance fell to -23 this month from -12 in November, the lowest reading since October last year. The export orders measure worsened to -32 from -31, the weakest since January 2010.

CBI chief economic adviser Ian McCafferty said:

Conditions in the UK manufacturing sector remain difficult. The weaker export performance no doubt reflects ongoing instability in the euro area, our biggest export market, and its knock-on impact on prospects for the real economy.

A clear and orderly resolution to the [eurozone] crisis remains essential to prevent further adverse effedcts on both UK manufacturing and the wider economy.

10.40am: Following the Spanish bond auction, which went quite well, the UK sold £4bn of 1.75% gilts maturing in 2017 but demand wasn't as good. The Debt Management Office only got 1.27 times cover - well below the 1.66 cover ratio achieved at the last bond sale in October, and the lowest in any gilt auction since May.

March gilt futures extended losses by more than 20 basis points after the auction.

10.22am: Amid speculation that Standard & Poor's is gearing up for a downgrade of France's top credit rating, the head of the Bank of France Christian Noyer said today there is no justification for that. Controversially, he suggested that Britain's AAA rating should be downgraded first.

In an interview with local newspaper Le Telegramme de Brest, Noyer, a member of the ECB's governing council, also questioned whether the use of ratings agencies to guide investors was still valid.

In the arguments they [ratings agencies] present, there are more political arguments than economic ones.

The downgrade does not appear to me to be justified when considering economic fundamentals. Otherwise, they should start by downgrading Britain which has more deficits, as much debt, more inflation, less growth than us and where credit is slumping.

Noyer was also unhappy about critical comments from ratings agencies following last week's EU summit in Brussels. He said such comments had weakened positive sentiment in the markets following the agreement to draft a new treaty for deeper integration in the euro zone.

Frankly, the agencies have become incomprehensible and irrational. They threaten even when states have taken strong and positive decisions. One could think that the use of agencies to guide investors is no longer valid.

10.01am: Spain has sold just over €6bn of bonds maturing in 2016, 2020 and 2021. The average yield, or interest rate, on the 2016 bond fell to 4% compared with 5.27% at the previous auction on 1 December. But the yields on the 2020 and 2021 debt have risen, to 5.2% and 5.5% respectively.

Spain saw solid demand for the bonds, paying over 2 percentage points less to issue a 5-year bond than Italy yesterday. It far exceeded its target of selling €3.5bn bonds. It seems that investors have been reassured by Madrid's cost cutting.

9.58am: Michael Derks, chief strategist at FxPro, believes that while this year Europe has dominated the headspace of investors and traders, next year China will absorb much of the focus.

Europe may be terrifying, but equally frightening are the signs that China's booming economy is rapidly unravelling. Recent surveys of manufacturing suggest that growth in the sector is actually contracting, money supply growth last month was the slowest for more than a decade and export growth has slowed markedly, especially to Europe. Property prices are declining and quite quickly in some major cities. For instance, one survey of new home prices in Beijing claimed that they fell by more than one-third in November alone. Developers, squeezed by lending restrictions and higher rates, have invariably been forced into a fire-sale of new developments at a time of huge oversupply. In many cities, property valuations had become completely unsustainable in terms of price/income ratios.

As is so often the case, excess leverage is amplifying China's slide. According to the IMF, the value of loans as a percentage of GDP has doubled in the country since 2006. Justifiably, there is growing concern that bad debts at financial institutions could grow quite swiftly next year. China will soon discover just how difficult it is to manage the combination of widespread deleveraging and a large debt mountain.

At the same time, it must be said that China has a fair degree of policy flexibility available. Bank reserve ratios must be lowered as a matter of urgency, and by a significant percentage; fiscal policy needs to be loosened and the currency needs to be allowed to depreciate, especially with dollar demand so strong. The latter may be controversial, and would certainly attract enormous ire in Washington (especially during an election year), but would be defensible, especially if China slipped back into recording trade deficits. Offshore investors have been fleeing China over recent months in any event – witness the 30% decline in the Shanghai Composite over the past six months, the recent pressure on the yuan and the decline in China's massive foreign exchange reserves in recent months.

9.37am: Britons' satisfaction with the Bank of England has fallen to a record low although inflation expectations eased from a three-year high, a quarterly survey from the central bank found.

9.33am: More on the Office for National Statistics' latest retail sales figures. While they were down 0.4% last month, broadly in line with City forecasts, monthly increases in September and October were both revised higher, leaving retail sales 0.7% higher in the three months to November.

Samuel Tombs, UK economist at Capital Economics, says:

Today's official UK retail sales figures confirm that November was a bad month for retailers and will raise concerns that spending will be soft over the crucial festive period. Both food and non-food sales fell sharply.

What's more, the drop in sales volumes may have been greater had retailers not resorted to another month of discounting. Granted, consumers might just be putting off their Christmas shopping until the last minute. But anecdotal evidence from retailers and recent surveys suggesting that shopper numbers are still down on their levels a year ago indicate that such a surge has not come through yet. Moreover, a splurge by consumers in the final weeks before Christmas will only mean that retail spending in early 2012 is even weaker than currently seems likely.

9.30am: Retail sales in Britain fell in November as consumer cut back spending on computers, mobile phones, watches and jewellery. Official figures showed sales volumes including fuel dropped 0.4% from the previous month, and were down 0.7% excluding fuel.

9.22am: Let's take another look at the markets. European stock markets have bounced back from heavy losses in recent days. The FTSE is up nearly 20 points at 5385, a 0.36% rise while Germany's Dax has climbed less than 50 points, or 0.8%, to 5722 and France's CAC is up 23 points, or 0.8% at 2999. Spain's Ibex has risen 0.5% and Italy's FTSE MIB is up 1%.

On bond markets, ten-year Italian bond yields have hit 7.26% while Spanish yields are steady at 5.73% ahead of a bond auction of €3.5bn of 2016, 2020 and 2021 bonds - the last eurozone debt sale before the Christmas break.

Spain is likely to get decent demand today - but at the cost of paying record interest rates, according to WestLB's eurozone rates strategist Michael Leister.

Manoj Ladwa, senior trader at ETX Capital, says:

Global markets are staging something of a recovery this morning as traders edge back into assets that suffered the brunt of yesterday's selling. Equities, gold and crude oil are all attracting interest as opportunistic traders pile in for a rebound. But the initial euphoria may be short-lived as Chinese and European manufacturing figures continue to show signs of contraction, further confirming the global economic weakness.

9.17am: Reaction to the eurozone PMI surveys is slowly trickling in. Analysts have been slow to react... (it's not Christmas yet!)

Martin van Vliet at ING says the readings suggest the "eurozone economy is slipping into a 'mild' recession rather than falling off a cliff".

The pick-up in the composite PMI was primarily driven by a further improvement in the services component, tentatively suggesting that domestic demand in the large "core" countries is not crumbling in the face of fiscal austerity and the financial market turmoil. The manufacturing PMI also bounced up, as we had expected, but at 46.9 it remains very subdued.

Looking at the available country data, the German composite output index rose back into expansion territory (to 51.3), and the French equivalent also saw an improvement (rising from 48.8 to 49.8). A flash estimate for the other eurozone countries is not available, but the average for this group remained in deep contraction territory – which is the most troubling aspect of today's report. Indeed, ongoing economic contraction in the peripheral countries will compound their debt problems.

All in all, despite the further pick-up in December, the PMI data still suggest that eurozone real GDP saw a marked contraction in the fourth quarter (of around 0.4% quarter-on-quarter). Moreover, the subdued forward looking new orders component of the survey points to the possibility of a relapse over the next few months. That said, for now, the PMI data are consistent with a "mild" recession scenario rather than the deep recession we experienced after the Lehman collapse.

9.15am: More bad news on China. Foreign investment in the country dropped nearly 10% in November.

With the EU — China's largest export market — in the doldrums, China's commerce ministry spokesman Shen Danyang described trade prospects as "grim."

"The impact of the global economic climate means the foreign trade environment is very severe," Shen said. He said China would focus on faster growing regions such as Russia and other emerging economies.

9.09am: Turning to the euro, which dipped to $1.2991 this morning, Michael Derks, chief strategist at FXPro, has these musings about the strength of the dollar:

Although the euro's decline below $1.30 is attracting much of the attention in FX markets, it is actually the continuing surge in the dollar which ought to be generating just as much interest. The dollar index jumped to 80.5 yesterday, not that far from the high for the year recorded in the first few days of January. Since the end of October, the dollar index is up by more than 7%, a very significant move for the world's major reserve currency.

Dollar demand over the past couple of months has been very pronounced for a number of different reasons. First, both investors and traders have been rushing to divert some of their euro exposure into the greenback, fearing Europe's sovereign debt and banking crisis could actually result in the demise of the single currency and/or many of Europe's largest banks. Second, financial markets in Europe have completely seized up, making it exceedingly difficult for banks and companies to obtain funding. As a result, they have been forced to get funding in other currencies, principally the dollar. Third, the US dollar is benefitting from the improving economic fortunes being enjoyed in America, which contrast sharply with those of Europe where most economies are either already in or are directly heading for recession, and in Asia where growth is also slowing. On Tuesday, the Fed actually upgraded its economic forecast.

To be clear, the dollar is not just benefitting from euro abandonment. The gold price has collapsed by another $150 this week as investors reduce their safe-haven bets on the precious metal in favour of the greenback. High-beta currencies such as the Aussie and the Indian rupee are suffering as well. It is little wonder the dollar is in such high demand. As we have been suggesting recently, these themes supporting the dollar could run on for some time to come.

9.06am: The eurozone continues to contract, but at a slightly slower pace. The overall PMI survey edged up to 47.9 this month from 47 in November, with services at 48.1 (November: 47.5) and manufacturing at 46.9 (November: 46.4).

8.46am: The latest German PMI surveys are out: Both manufacturing and services have improved slightly. The manufacturing index rose to 48.1 in December from 47.9 in November, still indicating contraction. The services PMI hit 52.7, up from 50.3. The composite survey, which comprises both sectors, hit a four-month high of 51.3 against 49.4 in November.

Survey compiler Markit tweeted:

Markit Economics

Germany on course to avoid GDP contraction in Q4…but it's touch and go

8.11am: The European Central Bank fears that higher bank capital requirements could push the economy into a recession as they would hold back bank lending, news agency Market News International reported, quoting anonymous sources.

The European Banking Authority has decreed that banks should have core Tier 1 capital of at least 9% of risk-weighted assets, exceeding the 7% minimum world leadres agreed to phase in from 2013. It estimates that European banks would need an extra €114.7bn of cpapital.

Doubts about the limit are growing, with the ECB concerned that banks could sell assets and tighten lending criteria to hit the new capital targets.

A eurozone central banker told MNI:

If you combine [asset] disposals with an agressive fiscal tightening, you are creating the conditions for a sharp contraction.

8.10am: Get your shotguns ready. Britain's defence chiefs are taking the eurozone crisis so seriously they've begun to draw up plans to cope with the potential military fallout, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Gen Richards, the Chief of the Defence Staff, said economic issues present the biggest threat to Britain and its interests in the world. He told the Royal United Services Institute:

I am clear that the single biggest strategic risk facing the UK today is economic rather than military. Over time, a thriving economy must be the central ingredient in any UK Grand Strategy. This is why the eurozone crisis is of such huge importance not just to the City of London but rightly to the whole country and to military planners like me.

The Armed Forces are facing painful cuts and the loss of tens of thousands of personnel.

8.06am: London's leading shares have opened slightly higher, trading up 16 points at 5383, a 0.3% gain. Germany's Dax is up 0.45% while France's CAC edged 0.15% higher.

7.44am: Good morning. Welcome back to the live blog. We'll be bringing you the latest news and developments on the eurozone debt crisis and world economy.

Asian stocks have entered bear market territory and the euro and commodities like silver are nursing losses amid a flight to less risky investments such as the dollar. Spot silver lost more than 2% to $28.26, the lowest since the end of September as investors retreated from metals. The euro is hovering near an 11-month low of $1.2945.

Italy was forced to pay an eye-watering 6.47% on 5-year bonds yesterday, a record borrowing cost for the euro era, after last week's EU summit failed to deliver a lasting solution to the eurozone crisis.

A private sector survey indicating China's factory output will shrink again in December added to the gloomy mood today. The HSBC PMI for manufacturing rose slightly in December but stayed in negative territory. It hit 49 compared with 47.7 in November, still indicating contraction.

And big Japanese manufacturers turned pessimistic this quarter, the Bank of Japan's latest Tankan survey showed, a sign the stubbornly strong yen, Europe's debt crisis and slowing global growth are taking their toll on the export-reliant economy.

Michael Hewson market analyst at CMC Markets says:

With cracks starting to appear in Friday's fiscal compact the agreement could not be more badly named because it is anything but. This has seen investors finally lose confidence and seen the single currency break below $1.30.

With ratings agency Fitch downgrading a host of European banks last night, the prognosis continues to go from bad to worse, with Credit Agricole downgraded one notch to "A+".

European markets are set to continue their week-long sell-off, with Germany's Dax and France's CAC poised to open 0.3% to 0.4% lower. Wall Street is also expected to make a weaker start.

News of the World editor: I felt there were bombs under the newsroom floor

News of the World editor: I felt there were bombs under the newsroom floor

Colin Myler tells Leveson inquiry of mood after Clive Goodman's jailing over phone hacking and Andy Coulson's resignation

Colin Myler, the former editor of the News of the World, has said he felt there were "bombs under the newsroom floor" when he arrived to take over from Andy Coulson in 2007.

Myler was parachuted in from Rupert Murdoch's New York Post to take over from Coulson after he resigned in the wake of the jailing of royal editor Clive Goodman and the private investigator Glenn Mulcaire on phone-hacking charges.

He told the Leveson inquiry into press ethics on Thursday that he knew then that practices at the paper had to be tightened up.

"I felt there could have been bombs under the newsroom floor and I didn't know where they were and I didn't know when they were going to go off."

He said it was evident after the police had removed three binliners of documents and notes from Mulcaire's home that something could explode at any moment.

Myler said the "for Neville" email – the first indication that phone hacking was not limited to one rogue reporter – was one of those potential bombs.

"You mentioned bombs under the newsroom floor," counsel for the inquiry Robert Jay asked: "This was creating a tendency for one or more of those bombs to explode, would you agree with that?"

Myler agrees, and said: "There was no appetite to go back to that place."

The former editor was also asked if he knew if the "for Neville" email was handed over to James Murdoch at a meeting on 10 June 2008, when the Taylor settlement was being discussed.

Myler said he could not recall but that if the paper's legal chief Tom Crone testified that he did, he believed that would have been the case.

"I can't remember if he did that," he said. "I am aware that Crone said in his testimony and I have no reason to disbelieve that he did what he said he did."

Myler also revealed that he had not seen copies of internal emails that proved he and the paper's former legal chief Tom Crone had communicated the extent of the hacking until they were released by the culture committee this week.

Just To Be Clear, Meredith Vieira Hasn't Retired!

Just To Be Clear, Meredith Vieira Hasn't Retired!

Just because you haven't seen her on TV lately, does not mean Meredith Vieira has thrown in the towel. Quite the opposite, in fact!

It seems many are under the impression that Meredith has retired since she left her job at the Today Show. If they dug a little deeper, they would know that her husband Richard Cohen has secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis, and she has taken time off from work to spend more time with him.

But fear not - her career has not fallen by the waste side. Meredith is still doing gigs as a special correspondent for Today and hosts Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. (That's still on???)

Still, Meredith wants people to understand that even though it might not have been evident before, her career has always come in second to her family. She explains:

"If you look at my career path, it's been always about prioritizing. I don't believe that you can have it all. You have to set priorities for yourself. I've always felt that family was the most important thing. That's not a putdown of people who work very hard and are juggling very high-pressure jobs, but you have to figure out what works best for you, and for me, that meant switching off different jobs through the course of my career to find ones that provide better balance for me."

She's a tough and sensible lady that Meredith Vieira is!

We're happy to know that Richard is doing better and that the time the two are spending together is time well spent.

Here's hoping for many, many, many more years of that!

Leveson inquiry: Derek Webb, Colin Myler, Daniel Sanderson - live

Leveson inquiry: Derek Webb, Colin Myler, Daniel Sanderson - live

• 37-year-old woman arrested in inquiry into payments to police
• Myler felt there were 'bombs under newsroom floor' at NoW
• Can't recall if Murdoch handed email but no reason to doubt Crone
• After June 2008 knew 'rogue reporter' defence failed to hold

12.31pm: Sanderson explains how the diaries were translated piecemeal.

We were translating the document; we were writing the story; we were checking with the McCanns and they were happy with the story; we would publish it.

I wasn't aware what the NoW planned to do with the diary once it was in the office.

We looked at the diary and for every entry we would cross-reference that with stories that may have appeared in the newspapers.

12.29pm: Sanderson says he believes the document came from the Portuguese police.

It had obviously been translated from Portuguese. I suppose thinking back it must have come from the Portuguese police. From memory when I was looking through the documents, I think there were comments on certain pages I remember. There were notes and comments, it looked like some kind of official document.

Sanderson says he was concerned about the diaries: "The whole thing caused me concern."

Did he share those concerns?

It's very very difficult for me to try explain but my thinking throughout this whole process was this story was going to be published with the co-operation of the McCanns.

12.28pm: Sanderson says: "With hindsight, it was clearly the wrong decision to publish."

12.26pm: Jay again asks Sanderson if he was he not concerned about the provenance of the diaries.

Sanderson struggles to answer and says: "I was a junior reporter at the time."

Leveson intervenes and says that because he is looking into press ethics "what junior members of staff thought is important".

12.23pm: Sanderson says he thought the News of the World was not going to publish the diary without the McCanns' consent.

It was clearly a private document I understood that, but at that stage we were not in possession of the diary so we didn't know what we were dealing with. As I understand the News of the World did not intend to publish it. I was told at the time that we would not be publishing the diary unless we had the express permission of the McCanns.

12.22pm: Sanderson says he knew the diary was "a private document".

Leveson asks if he was concerned about the provenance of the diary.

Sanderson says:

A diary is clearly a private document but at the time this was being publically circulated around Portugal. What the newspapers planned to do with the diary once we were in possession of that I didn't know that at the time.

12.19pm: Sanderson explains how he got in touch with a Portuguese journalist and they discussed payment for a copy of the diary. Sanderson then liaised with the news editor at the time, Ian Edmondson.

Edmondson hired a freelancer, Gerard Couzens, who is based in Spain to travel to Portugal to meet the journalist and collect the diary.

Sanderson says he wasn't aware at the time that the ultimate source was the Portuguese police.

12.18pm: Daniel Sanderson the News of the World reporter whose name appeared on the Kate McCann diary story in the News of the World, is up next.

McCann told the inquiry that publication of the diary left her feeling "violated".

12.16pm: Myler urges newspapers to pool their collective brainpower to sort the industry out. He says broadcasters also have to own up to their responsiblities.

He points out that TV channels pursued stories like the McCann story just as enthusiastically as the press.

He also says the rivalry between the broadsheets and red-tops is "almost like a war zone" and it is time peace broke out.

The collective brainpower of those who produce newspapers is pretty magnificent. If only they could drop some of the commercial rivalry … and embrace the issues.

12.16pm: Myler says some of the behaviour of the press has been "despicable" and it would be "unfair" to tar the industry with the same brush.

12.14pm: Leveson says he is "sure over the last five months there has been a lot of reflection" in the industry about its practices. He adds proof of this came in this morning's claims by Max Clifford that two stories have not appeared in the papers recently because of Leveson.

"The real question is, will it last?" says Leveson; he adds that his issue is "creating a system that ensure it does last".

12.14pm: Myler expands on his theme and says the industry has cleaned up its act.

There is no place for that now,. I think the industry has understood that, and reflected and changed its attitude to that. If you talk to a proprietor of any freelance picture agency most of them are going out of business pretty fast.

12.12pm: Leveson refers back to the Sienna Miller testimony in which she told the inquiry how she was spat at and verbally abused by photographers.

He also refers to the Charlotte Church and Kate McCann testimony in which they said photographers would jump out of bushes in an attempt to get photrographs.

Myler says those practices are unacceptable.

He says it was also unacceptable to harrass the mother of Hugh Grant's baby.

12.02pm: Myler on photographs and subterfuge:

Unless there was a public interest defence in using photographs that had been taken under subterfuge, that were supporting the story, or that met the PCC criteria, I wouldn't be interested in them.

12.01pm: Myler is asked if he ever doctored a photograph.

Jay refers to the example Sienna Miller gave in the second week of the inquiry when she told how was playing with a disabled child and the photograph was presented in such a way that she appeared inebriated.

Myler says he was not familiar with this or any other case of photographs being doctored.

12.01pm: The inquiry is now discussing the use of celebrity photographs. Myler says he has rejected photographs.

He cites the PCC code that bans photographs that are in breach of a person's reasonable expectation of privacy.

Jay says the inquiry has already heard of breaches of this code from previous witnesses (which have included Charlotte Church, JK Rowling and Sienna Miller).

11.59am: Leveson asks if there is such a thing as the "lob it in" school of journalism.

Myler says there is not.

I don't think there is. I think in the McCann early days when Madeleine wen missing were truly appalling and should never appeared by any standards in this country. The industry did not like what those newspapers were doing, those newspapers were held to account publicly.

Most journalists and editors I know these days have incredibly high standards of ethics and the law. Yes, we get it wrong … but the manner in which we are all tarnished as reckless and negligent, it's just not there in my experience.

11.54am: Myler says it would be "reckless" to publish untrue stories.

Any editor that published something knowing that they published something that wasn't true would be reckless and foolish.

11.51am: Jay is now picking up testimony from former executive editor Neil Wallis who gave evidence on Monday.

Wallis told Leveson that when a story came in from a tipster "you would then task a reporter to make that story work, see if that story will work".

Did Myler agree with this, asks Jay.

Myler replies:

It might have been Mr Wallis's process, but the reality is you don't just take a phone call from someone, you say thank you very much and we'll see if it's true and accurate.

He adds:

I reject absolutely a proposition that we sat down and thought about a certain subject and how it should be and than worked out how we fit that recipe.

11.46am: The hearing is now discussing a letter from the PCC which then promulgated a report in 2009 which was subsequently withdrawn, dated November 2009.

Jay says the PCC "refer to the claims in the Guardian not quite amounting to their billing, or words to that effect".

Myler says he was "full and frank" with the PCC and had""no belief that they didn't think I was being anything other than full or frank with them".

11.44am: Jay accuses him of using "rather emollient" and "slightly disingenuous" commenbts regarding the extent of phone hacking in this correspondence to the PCC.

Myler points out that he wasn't at the Clive Goodman trial. "I had to rely on those who did attend the trial," he says.

He says he did not read the transcript of the trial.

11.41am: Myler agrees with Jay who asks if it is correct to say that "after June 2008 he no longer believed the 'single rogue reporter' defence".

Myler said this was correct "because the 'for Neville' email made that clear".

The rogue reporter defence failed to hold once the 'for Neville' email was discovered and I made that clear to the select committee in I think July 2009 when I pointed out its signficance.

11.38am: They are now discussion a Guardian report that the police had evidence that the paper had hacked into thousands of mobile phones.

He said he "didn't have any evidence to support" what the Guardian had reported.

I didn't have any direct information that our internal inquiries had gone to that point. One of the things that weighed heavily with me was that the police hadn't interviewed anyone else but Goodman in its inquiries. I was relying on what the police said.

11.32am: Jay asks if the "clear and convincing justification" for cash payments had to be in writing.

Myler replies:

Preferably it would be in writing, but if it was something for which the departmental head was requesting anonymity, he may have preferred a meeting with the managing editor.

11.29am: Reading from the correspondence, Robert Jay QC asks if it was his policy that "requests for cash payments must be accompanied by compelling and written justification signed off by the relevant department head".

Myler says he thinks that process was already in place when he arrived.

He agrees that this covered for payments for surveillance – if it was private, he would expect to see details.

11.29am: They are discussing a letter to the PCC just three or four weeks into the job and another piece of correspondence on 10 May 2007 that deals with the issue of cash payments.

Myler says he has "finessed all rules" to avoid a "Goodman style recurrence".

11.27am: The inquiry has now resumed.

11.20am: Colin Myler's witness statements have been published:

http://www.levesoninquiry.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Second-Witness-Statement-of-Colin-Myler1.pdf

http://www.levesoninquiry.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Third-Witness-Statement-of-Colin-Myler.pdf

11.14am: The inquiry has now returned to early 2007 when Myler had just joined News of the World.

Clive Goodman had just been jailed.

He is responding to a letter that had been sent to him by Mr Truman in February 2007.

The letter is nine pages long. Myler asks if he could the letter to refamiliarise himself with his correspondence.

Myler didn't receive the bundle, so Leveson breaks to give Myler time to read the correspondence.

11.07am: Jay is quoting from Michael Silverleaf's opinion: "At least three NGN journalists appear to have been intimately involved in Mulcaire's research and Goodman's affairs".

11.06am: Jay says: "If I asked was it a cover-up would you embrace it or shrink from that?"

Myler replies:

No, I wouldn't embrace that. I don't believe it was a cover-up, we were dealing with a very difficult negotiation. Newspapers deal with difficult negotiations throughout their business. I don't think its wrong or unreasonable for a business to protect the reputation of itself especially given what happened through the course of 2006-07.

Lord Justice Leveson says what one person calls a "cover up" another calls "limiting reputational damage"; it's a semantic issue.

Myler replies: "Absolutely sir."

Leveson asks if Myler believed the "one rogue reporter" defence at this stage.

He replies:

It couldn't be correct as much as the 'for Neville' email had indicated that at least another reporter had transcribed it, and it named another reporter.

11.05am: They are now discussing the transcript of notes of a call Pike had with Tom Crone on 10 June.

He is asked about a line that says "CM moving towards to tell Taylor to fuck off".

Myler says perhaps his northern language came through. Leveson suggests to him that he was extremely angry over what was happening.

11.01am: They are now discussing Julian Pike's notes of his call to Tom Crone in which it is said that at a "Mtg with JM + CM" "JM sd he wanted to think through options".

Myler says:

I don't believe he wanted to pay £1m but I think he was happy to go a way to see what negotiation could take place to settle the claim.

Jay asks if Murdoch give authority for a particular figure.

Myler replies:

I can't remember a particular figure, but I do remember leaving the meeting with the feeling he wanted to settle, not at any price.

11.00am: Myler is asked if the term "culture" of the newsroom was discussed at that meeting.

He says he can't remember.

10.58am: Jay asks if Myler can remember what documents were shown to Murdoch in that meeting on 10 June.

Myler replies:

I have said before that I can't recollect that he handed over the 'for Neville' email for him to see. I can't remember if he did that. I am aware that Crone said in his testimony and I have no reason to disblieve that he did what he said he did.

10.55am: They are now discussing the email sent on 7 June 2008 by Myler to James Murdoch:

Update on the Gordon Taylor (Professional Footballers Asscociation) case
Unfortunately it is as bad as we feared.
The note from Julian Pike of Farrer's is extremely telling regarding Taylor's vindictiveness. It would be helpful if Tom Crone and I could have five minutes with you on Tuesday.
Colin

10.55am: Myler says he cannot recall what Silverleaf's figure was.

10.50am: Another note from Tom Crone to Myler shows that he was forwarded an email from Julian Pike regarding the settlement which says that Taylor "wants to demonstrate that what happended to him is/was rife throughout the organisation".

These emails were released to the select committee earlier this week. Myler says he has only seen them recently because News International had refused to release his correspondence to him.

10.48am: Jay is now referring to correspondence in which it is noted that a Part 36 offer was made "on Tuesday". The note says that Taylor had previously made clear "that what he wanted was seven figures plus idemnity costs - £1.2m".

10.45am: Myler says:

What I remember being told was his position was very simple - he [Taylor] wanted £1m or he wanted to go to trial.

What I remember being told was he wanted to humiliate the paper.

10.44am: Lord Justice Leveson intervenes and says it wasn't actuallly on 6 June, but it was 3 June because then Pike is telling Taylor's solicitor that he is about to send another Part 36 offer.

Jay agrees and says then that the offer must have been made at a date "closer to 3 June".

Leveson points out: "You would normally tell an opponent you were about to make an offer for £350,000 unless you were about to do it."

10.41am: Robert Jay QC is now trying to establish who instructed the offer of £350,000.

Jay: Instructions had to come from someone and that someone had to be either you or the chief exective?

Myler:
Yes, but I wouldn't have taken it upon myself to sanction that kind of money, because I would have had to go to the chief executive for the authority for that.

Jay then refers to an attendance note of a meeting on 6 June 2008. It says that "JCP [Pike] had sent across a Part 36 offer for £350,000".

The QC concludes: "The best evidence we have is that this offer was made on 6 June, which was after the advice from Silverleaf and before the meeting on June 10 with Murdoch."

Jay says instructions must therefore have come from Myler or Murdoch, because Pike himself couldn't make instructions. Those had to come from the client.

10.39am: Myler had "absolute confidence" in the experience in the way in which Crone and Pike were conducting the negotiation.

After leading counsel had advised, an offer was made to Taylor of £350,000.

I am sure I was aware, but there was a lot of moving parts to this decision …

I wasn't involved in every step of the way.

10.38am: Myler says: "This was a case we didn't have a choice with. It was a matter of what the figure would be to settle and a figure Mr Taylor would accept."

Lord Justice Leveson intervenes and asks who was authorised to make payments of such amounts.

Myler replies it was James Murdoch, the then chief executive of the company:

No, no it was the chief executive. It was clear that the level Taylor was coming from was not in my authority, that it was way beyond Mr Crone's and my league.

10.34am: PFA boss Gordon Taylor had become aware of the "for Neville" email, which was the first indication that more than one reporter at the News of the World may have been involved in phone hacking.

Taylor knew this and News International was negotiating a settlement following demands for £1m.

Myler recalls that the sum Taylor wanted was an "extremely high amount". The story had not appeared in the paper.

The demands being made by Taylor were "pretty blunt", says Myler.

10.33am: Jay wants to know if the "for Neville" email was not a bombshell.

"You mentioned bombs under the newsroom floor," he says. "This was creating a tendency for one or more of those bombs to explode, would you agree with that?"

Myler agrees, and says "there was no appetite to go back to that place".

10.31am: Myler says his main recollection was the "for Neville" email, not the opinion comtaining the phrase "culture of illegal information access".

The discovery of the 'for Neville' email was … fatal to our case – that is what I remember being central to silk's view, a view shared by Mr Pike, Mr Crone and indeed by myself.

10.29am: Myler does not remember being told about Silverleaf's phrase "a culture of illegal information access".

Lord Justice Leveson expresses surprise:

That would hit you absolutely between the eyes. If you are there to do anything it would be to cope with that.

10.28am: Jay returns to the Silverleaf opinion, and Myler says he didn't see it. He says he would have been briefed on it, however.

10.26am: Leveson goes back to the note of the conversation with Pike on 28 May 2008 in which it is said "JM wld say get rid of them - cut out cancer".

Myler says he has nothing further to add by way of clarification.

10.26am: Myler says he does not "recall" the written opinion of Michael Silverleaf.

10.23am: Myler says he felt there were always "bombs under the newsroom floor":

I always had some discomfort. I felt there could have been bombs under the newsroom floor and I didn't know where they were and I didn't know when they were going to go off.

10.20am: Myler says he was aware at the time that the police removed three sacks of material from Glenn Mulcaire's home when he was arrested and he had assumed they would have, if they had any evidence, spoken to others.

One of the things that was very foremost in my mind what the police took away three black binliners of evidence from Mr Mulcaire's home when he was arrested in August 2006. Given what I believed to be a thorough police investigation, given that police had not interviewed any other member of staff, that weighed heavily on my mind because I assumed they would have done so [if there were suspicions of wider illegal activity].

Myler says another factor that influenced his action was that the company called in Burton Copeland to act as a "bridgehead" between News International and the police.

10.17am: Another point in the note says: "CM - my position as Editor - cannot ignore it - back to CG+"

Myler agrees this suggests he could not ignore allegations made by the former royal editor Clive Goodman who alleged after he was dismissed that others at the News of the World were involved in illegal activities.

10.17am: Myler says it is difficult to go back and look at notes given the information that has come to light from police subsequently.

10.16am: The note says: "didn't believe culture in the newsroom - editor".

Myler is not clear as to what Pike meant.

Robert Jay QC says one possible explanation is that "you the editor didn't believe it was going on" in 2008.

10.12am: Myler is being asked about Farrer partner Julian Pike's notes on a conversation they had about the Gordon Taylor settlement, which contains the phrase "wait for silk's view".

"I don't recall this conversation," says Myler.

10.05am: Colin Myler will continue to give evidence this morning – he is expected to be asked about the 'for Neville' email exchanges with James Murdoch.

In the meantime, the Leveson inquiry has published the statements of Jonathan Chapman, the former News International legal chief.

Jonathan Chapman, statement 1

Jonathan Chapman, statement 2

9.51am: A 37-year-old woman has been arrested this morning as part of Operation Elveden, the Scotland Yard investigation into payments to police.

The Metropolitan police issued this statement this morning:

At 0615hrs on Thursday, 15 December, officers arrested a woman on suspicion of committing offences involving making payments to police officers for information.

She was arrested at a residential address in Surrey, and has been taken to a south London police station where she remains in custody.

This is the seventh arrest under Operation Elveden. 16 people have been arrested under Op Weeting and one person arrested under Op Tuleta.

9.25am: Max Clifford has told the Times that tabloid newspapers have in recent weeks declined to publish "two major stories" about celebrities over fears that Lord Justice Leveson might not approve.

Clifford, the man behind various front-page tabloid stories over the years, told the Times: "There are two major stories that have come to me in recent weeks which newspaper editors would be running over burning coals to get if the Leveson inquiry wasn't going on.

"There are no illegal methods involved in obtaining either story but the editors are worried about anything that touches on the private lives of the rich and famous.

"They are thinking 'how would Leveson respond to this' rather than 'that's a bloody good story, let's get it in the paper'."

Clifford thinks the Leveson inquiry has "already changed the face of tabloid journalism". "The atmosphere is like I have never known it in 40 years," he says.

9.18am: Good morning and welcome to day 18 of the Leveson inquiry.

Today we will hear again from Colin Myler, the last editor of the News of the World.

Myler was questioned at length on Wednesday about how his paper published the private diaries of Kate McCann without her consent. Later today the inquiry will hear from Daniel Sanderson, the reporter who is bylined on the story about Kate's diaries in September 2008.

Also up today is Derek Webb, the private investigator who said News of the World paid him to follow 90 people, including members of the royal family and celebrities.

James Robinson will be at the Royal Courts of Justice for the hearing. You can follow him on Twitter at @jamesro47.

Lisa O'Carroll and Josh Halliday are on the keyboards. You can follow them on Twitter at @lisaocarroll and @joshhalliday.

Tune in at 10am for minute-by-minute coverage.
