We're not exactly sure what the plot of this movie is, but it stars Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor, so we're in!

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a comedy-drama that focuses on bringing fly-fishing to Yemen and also stars Kristin Scott Thomas. What makes this even more intriguing is that Slumdog Millionaire's Simon Beaufoy also wrote the movie, based on the novel by Paul Torday.

The movie did well at the Toronto Film Festival so we have a feeling it'll be worth our time.

It hits theaters March 2, 2012!

A lot goes into hosting a great party. Since the holiday season is here, we know you'll be doing more than your share of party planning, so we thought we'd share some of the biggest hosting don'ts we could think of. Make sure your seasonal soirees are a success by avoiding these five festivity no-nos.

Woman washing dishes and crying

Don’t apologize for the food

The worst thing you can do before serving meal is to apologize for it. Guests don’t need to know you had to substitute a certain ingredient or you made some tweaks to the recipe. Don’t tell them they’re not going to like it before they even get a chance to taste it. We understand that cooking for a large group can be tricky, but apologizing for what you’re about to serve makes guests feel awkward. If you don’t think your dish is up to a certain standard, that’s your opinion, and something that should be kept to yourself. Let guests enjoy their meal without someone telling them that what they’re eating could be better.

Don’t stay behind the scenes

As tempting as it may be to man the stove and stay close to the kitchen to tidy as you go or prep anything that hasn’t been done in advance, it’s your party, so you should be with your guests. If you don’t mix and mingle, you have two problems:

  1. You won’t have any fun. Hanging out in the kitchen while everyone else is enjoying themselves doesn’t sound very festive to us.
  2. You won’t know if people are having a good time. The only way to make sure guests are comfortable, happy and have everything they need is to be part of the proceedings.

Don’t fight with your spouse

Hosting can be stressful, and we all have disagreements with loved ones, but avoid bringing your disagreements to the dinner table. Your guests don’t need to see you and your spouse arguing about who burnt the roast vegetables or why the upstairs bathroom didn’t get cleaned. Keep your arguments to yourself while you have a houseful of guests. You’ll just make them uncomfortable and likely dampen the mood of the party.

Don’t be a show-off

The wine you’re serving might have cost more than your entire outfit but there’s no need to brag about it. Treating guests to something special, be it a liquor, cut of meat, decadent dessert or the aforementioned bottle of wine should be just that – a treat, and not an excuse to show off and wave around a price tag. It’s tacky and makes you seem like you’re trying to create a competition out of who can spend the most on their dinner party. Just let your guests enjoy themselves – without telling them how much their last mouthful cost.

Don’t pressure anyone

If someone doesn’t want dessert or a second helping or another cocktail, that’s OK. If might be acceptable for your grandmother to push food and drinks on people even when they’ve declined 13 times, but she’s from a different era and won’t take no for an answer anyway. As a good hostess you need to respect people’s wishes and avoid putting them on the spot if they turn something down.

Studies show that volunteering can increase an individual's sense of well-being, alleviate chronic pain and reduce depression.

"I felt connected and understood what I was doing," says Lori Harasem, a native of Canada who volunteered with Rebuild New Orleans Together to rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

"I really liked that we got to know about the person whose home we were rebuilding. To think of this senior, single woman living in a trailer made me aware that the need [for housing] was, and sadly still is, so great."

So what are we waiting for? Whether you're keen on carpentry, nature preservation or teaching abroad, there's a volunteer vacation out there to suit your interests. Here are SheKnows.com's five volunteer travel picks.

Volunteer vacation

Each One, Teach One in Africa

Work with African Impact on the Cape Town Pre-School Teaching and Education Project in township schools with poorly equipped classrooms and facilities. Tasks include helping disadvantaged children with crafts, painting, reading and games; organizing classes for children with special needs; serving meals; and cleaning and refurbishing classrooms. Volunteers stay in a fully furnished house staffed with a cook and housekeeper, and three meals per day are provided.  The house also has satellite television and a safe to store valuables, and is in within walking distance to a shopping mall. For two weeks, the program is $1,295 per person .

Speak Inglés in Spain

When Americans travel abroad, we usually try to pick up enough of the country’s language to at least navigate from our hotel to nearby attractions. That’s not the case during a volunteer vacation with Pueblo Ingles in Madrid, where volunteers must commit to never uttering a word of Spanish during their seven-day stay. In return for patiently helping Spanish businesspeople practice their conversational English, volunteers are housed in standard accommodations and enjoy three hearty meals a day including a buffet breakfast and a three-course lunch and dinner with red wine. Your only expenses during the trip are airfare to and from Madrid and accommodations in Madrid prior to and after your stay in the Pueblo Ingles village.

Volunteer and Get Rewarded at in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Take a break from sun and surf during your tropical winter getaway to volunteer at a national park.  Through February 15, 2012, guests of the Westin St. John Resorts & Villas will receive a $100 resort credit and transfers for their efforts. In conjunction with the Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park, visitors can participate in a one-day program that allows volunteers to show up any Tuesday or Thursday at 8 a.m. to help maintain park trails and ruins and remove debris from beaches and coast lines. The Westin St. John is only 10 minutes from the national park, and rates start at $399 per night based on double occupancy. To receive their resort credit, guests must present their volunteer voucher at the front desk. For reservations and more information, call 627-7206.

Become a Trail Blazer Across the United States

Founded in 1979, the American Hiking Society is the only national, recreation-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting America's hiking trails and the hiking experience. From Yosemite National Park in California to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Maine, volunteer vacationers can join the American Hiking Society for a week of building and maintaining trails in diverse locations across the country. No experience is necessary and trips vary in intensity from moderate to strenuous.  A registration fee of applies and basic campsite accommodations are provided.  Volunteers, however, should bring their own tents, sleeping bags, eating utensils and personal items.

Volunteer Vacation for Teens in Peru

Teens will experience a mix of service, fun and Peruvian culture during Camp Chief Ouray's Trekker Peru volunteer vacation. In summer 2012, a small group of 15- to 17-year-olds with adult chaperones will work on community service projects such as visiting an orphanage; travel through Peru's historic cities and sites; participate in dance and music lessons and try new adventures including sand boarding and desert camping. Space is limited, so interested participants should submit an application as soon as possible.  Trip costs vary depending on length, and a non-refundable $100 application fee is required. For more information, contact the camp’s office at 887- 2648.

Although you might have big decorating ideas and plans for your home, you might not have an equally big decorating budget. Fortunately, there are plenty of great looks you can create without spending a lot of money. If you want to create a designer look but don't want to break your budget in the process, here are some decorating tips to try.

Get a designer look for less

Although you might have big decorating ideas and plans for your home, you might not have an equally big decorating budget. Fortunately, there are plenty of great looks you can create without spending a lot of money. If you want to create a designer look but don't want to break your budget in the process, here are some decorating tips to try.

Follow the lead of professional designers

If you find it difficult to think up unique decorating ideas for your home, don't hire a professional decorator. Although professional decorators can provide a lot of value when decorating your home, they can often be a bit pricey. Instead, look through books, magazines and websites for inspiration. You'll find plenty of articles that feature the work of professional designers to use as a starting point. Although you might not be able to use all the name brands that the professional designers use, you can find economically priced pieces that re-create the overall look. By doing so, you'll create a beautiful designer look for a lot less money. For example, although a professional designer may use high-priced art pieces as part of their overall room design, you'll be able to find plenty of eye-catching wall sculptures , paintings and prints for much more affordable prices from online retailers or stores in your community.

Use art to spice up simple room designs

If you don't have the budget to replace furniture, flooring or other expensive room features, don't despair. You can use art pieces to add a designer look to even the most simply furnished room. The trick is to look for visually striking pieces that can be used to create strong focal points. If you immediately draw people's eyes to the artwork within a room, there will naturally be less focus on your slightly worn carpeting. For example, a striking piece of wooden wall artwork hung on a prominent wall could be used to create the central visual feature of a room.

Spruce up your existing furniture

Although you might not be able to afford new furniture, you can do a lot to visually improve the look of the pieces you already own. If your wood furniture are a little scratched, dingy or outdated, add a fresh coat of paint to spice them up and give them a whole new life. By choosing a trendy new color, you can transform an old or even ugly table or stand into an eye-catching, modern-looking piece.

If your upholstered furniture looks worn or dated, look for affordable slipcovers to spruce them up. Today's slipcovers are a vast improvement over the old-fashioned ones that your mother might have used. You'll find a wide variety of colors and patterns featuring modern fabrics that wear well and look great. Even one of the more expensive slipcovers costs a lot less than buying a new sofa or chair, so they're a good option when you're aiming for an attractive designer look on a tight budget.

You can also give your furniture a fresh look with new throw pillows, new cushions, or even by artistically draping a fabric throw across the back. These small designer touches aren't very expensive, but they can really add a lot to the overall look of a room.

Watch: How to paint furniture

Handpainted furniture can add personality and style to any room in your home. Whether you want to buy painted furniture or learn how to paint furniture, these tips will help.

Thinking about bringing Fido or Fluffy on your next European vacation? By nature, pets are lovable companions, which can make them excellent travel partners. As a responsible pet parent, you'll want to make sure your dog or cat has the necessary credentials to travel the world with you. Wherever your journey takes you, the following tips are must-haves to ensure safe and legal travels with your pet.

Dog in suitcase ready for vacation

Check in with the consulate

Once you have decided on your travel destination, get in contact with the consulate for instructions on allowing your pet into the country. Some countries will not allow foreign animals to cross borders. Missing this important step could put a huge damper on your plans.

Some pertinent questions to ask the consulate:

  • Will my pet be quarantined, and if so for how long?
Some countries do not have quarantine laws while others may require your pet to be quarantined for days or even months. Get the full scoop on quarantine laws so you don’t have to part from your furry friend longer than expected.
  • Are there special entry fees involved?
Be prepared to pay a variety of fees. From entry fees to airline fees, traveling with your pet isn’t cheap . Be prepared by avoiding financial surprises as much as possible.
  • What forms or tags are required for entry?
Each country has its own set of necessary documentation, so plan in advance to ensure you have all the necessary paperwork for your pet.
  • What vaccinations/bills of health are required?
Rabies vaccinations, microchip and health certificates are common requirements. However, these vary depending on the country of choice, so be sure to ask for a list of veterinary requirements.

Research and consult with your airline of choice

Find out what the airlines’ rules and requirements are for pets. Make sure to ask what vaccinations and documents are required for your pet to travel, as they may vary from one airline to another. Additionally, find out what conditions your pet will be traveling in if they are not allowed to ride in the cabin with you. Whenever possible, seek advice from other globe-trotting pet lovers that will provide insight on good and bad pet travel experiences.

Verify your pets’ health and wellness

Once you check in with the consulate and find out the airlines’ rules and regulations, make appointments with your veterinarian to get the necessary vaccinations. Plan well in advance, as some vaccinations require a series of shots over time. If your pet does not have a microchip, this is the time to get one, as it is a standard requirement for pets to be microchipped prior to traveling on an airplane. Before embarking with your dog or cat on an overseas adventure, have your vet verify that your pet is well enough for high-altitude situations or high stress levels associated with traveling long distances. Your vet can also give you insight to common travel questions such as how much to feed your pet prior to traveling or necessary items to pack for your pet. Documentation plays a large part in pet travel so always keep printed records of every vaccination.

800 more missing as typhoon Washi sweeps houses into rivers and out to sea off southern island of Mindanao

Rescuers are searching for more than 800 people missing in the southern Philippines after flash floods and landslides swept houses into rivers and out to sea, killing more than 650 people.

The cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on the island of Mindanao were worst hit when typhoon Washi hit shore late on Friday and early on Saturday, sending torrents of water and mud through villages and stripping mountainsides bare.

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said 652 people were killed in eight provinces in the southern Mindanao region, which is unused to typhoons.

"Our office was swamped with hundreds of requests to help find their missing parents, children and relatives," Gwendolyn Pang, secretary general of the PNRC, told reporters. "We're helping co-ordinate the search with local government, army, police and even other aid agencies."

Floods washed away houses with families inside in dozens of coastal villages around Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

"This is the first time this has happened in our city," Vicente Emano, mayor of Cagayan de Oro, said in a radio interview. He said officials in the area did not receive adequate warning before the typhoon struck.

The state disaster agency said adequate warnings had been given to officials and residents three days before the typhoon made landfall.

Disaster and health officials were struggling to deal with the scores of bodies that have been recovered. Some were stacked on top of each other in under-staffed mortuaries unable to cope with the number of dead.

"I saw for myself bloated bodies of women and children, not less than 100," the vice president, Jejomar Binay, told Philippines radio as he toured Cagayan de Oro.

Binay distributed food packs and ordered the relocation of families living near waterways and other hazards.

Brigadier General Roland Amarille, head of an army task force in Iligan, said soldiers had been mobilised to recover bodies and build coffins.

"We need bodybags and lime to deal with too many bodies," Amarille said, fearing an outbreak of disease.

"Local mortuaries are no longer accepting bodies and they are even asking people to bury the dead at once because there are too many bodies even in hallways," he said.

Most of the dead were from a slum area on an island sandwiched by two rivers in Iligan. "About 70% of the houses on the island were washed into the sea," Amarille said.

Mindanao, the southernmost major island in the Philippines, is a mineral-rich region that also produces rice and corn but is not normally in the path of the average 20 typhoons that hit the south-east Asian country each year.

"This poses challenges to us … We need to educate people with this kind of change in climate," Pang said. "The volume of rainfall for one month fell in just one day."

Typhoons normally strike the central Visayas region and the south and east of Luzon, the main island in the north.

Carmelita Pulosan, 42, said she and eight family members and neighbours in Cagayan de Oro survived by sitting on top of the tin roof of their house as it drifted miles into the open sea. They were rescued by a cargo ship.

"There was a deafening sound followed by a rush of water. We found ourselves in the river and the current took us out to the sea," said Pulosan.

"The current was very strong. God is really good to us. He saved my family," she said. Only one three-storey building was left standing in their village, Pulosan added.

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said the US, a major ally of the Philippines, was ready to help. The Chinese embassy would donate $10,000 to help in the relief efforts, an embassy official said.

Washi, downgraded to a tropical storm with gusts of up to 50 miles an hour (80kmh), was about 40 miles west of the southwestern city of Puerto Princesa and was expected to move out of Filipino waters late on Sunday.

Woman, 64, died after being ambushed in New York apartment building lift, doused with accelerant and set on fire

A man is being questioned by police in connection with the death of a woman burned alive in the lift of her New York City apartment building.

Police said a man smelling of petrol walked into a police station overnight and implicated himself in the killing.

The 47-year-old man, who has not been charged, said he had started a fire, a New York Police Department spokesman said. The man's identity has not been released.

Doris Gillespie, 64, was ambushed in the lift of her Brooklyn apartment building on Saturday afternoon, doused with an accelerant and set on fire with a Molotov cocktail. The suspect had been waiting for her when the lift doors opened to the fifth floor of her apartment building in Prospect Heights,.

"It was apparent he knew she was on the elevator," police said.

The attack happened shortly after 4pm, lasted about a minute and was recorded by two video cameras, including one inside the small lift.

The video showed the lift doors opening to the floor where Gillespie's apartment was located and the assailant stepping in and spraying her.

Gillespie, who had grocery bags in her arms, turned about 180 degrees and then crouched in an attempt to protect herself, he said. But the man sprayed her directly in the face and continued to spray her "sort of methodically" over her head and parts of her body as the bags draped off her arms. She turned and retreated to the back of the lift.

Then the suspect pulled out a barbecue-style lighter, used it to ignite a rag in a bottle and then waited for a few seconds before using the flames to set her afire, causing smoke to fill the lift.

The man backed out as the woman fell to the floor of the lift and seemed to pause before tossing the bottle inside the lift on to the woman.

Police would not comment on the motive in the killing, but said the suspect knew his victim.

Police released still images of the man Saturday night, showing him in a black jacket, wearing what appear to be surgical gloves and with a white dust mask perched atop his head like a pair of sunglasses. He is holding what appears to be a canister with a nozzle and spraying as he steps into the elevator.

Neighbours reported a fire in the building, unaware that the woman was burning alive in the lift.

A 3 am wakeup call meant that this day has probably been my busiest day yet. By 7 am my flight landed in Luxor and my day was fully underway. I headed to the Valley of the Kings first because its supposed to be one of the most amazing sites in all of Egypt. Im not sure how to describe it but its sort of the Grand Canyon of tombs specifically 63 tombs of kings from 1550 to 1069 BC.

We arrived in Guilin today after a twenty two hour train ride. The train was very exciting. We got off to an interesting start as we came very close to missing the train. Not only did we underestimate the total time it would take to get to the station but we got held up at every possible junction on the Shanghai metro. We arrived at the station about twelve minutes before our train was scheduled t

Sometimes during a hectic season, all you want to do is slow down and get back to basics. This recipe for basic Italian-style meatballs pairs perfectly with your favorite pasta to make Sunday dinner simple… and basic.

Spaghetti and Meatball dinner

Sunday dinner with family or friends can be a great time to relax, laugh and spend some time together. After a busy week and busy festivities ahead, keeping things simple is sometimes underrated, but these delicious Italian-style meatballs taste extraordinary!

Basic meatballs

This SheKnows recipe for basic meatballs is wonderful served with your favorite pasta, but if you'd prefer, make a meatball sub with these goodies!

Yields 3 dozen

Ingredients:

  •
4 slices white bread
  •
1 cup milk
  •
2 pounds ground beef

  • 2 tablespoons onion, finely minced

  • 1 egg, beaten
  •
1/3 cup Parmesan or Pecorino-Romano cheese
  •
2 cloves garlic, finely minced

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  •
1/4 cup bread crumbs

  • Oil for greasing pan

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a small bowl, soak the bread in milk.
  2. In a large bowl, add beef, onion, egg, cheese, garlic, salt and pepper. Combine with clean hands. With your hands, mash the milk-soaked bread in its bowl until bread breaks down and is soupy. Add milk and bread to meat; combine everything together with your hands. Add the bread crumbs, and combine well. You're now ready to form the meatballs.
  3. Make golf ball-sized meatballs by rolling them in the palms of your hands.
  4. Arrange meatballs on a lightly greased, rimmed baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes, or until tops are browned and slightly crispy and centers are no longer pink.

Sunday family time activity

When dinner is over, gather your family to make simple holiday decorations.

Whether you need to decorate your tree, mantel or staircase this holiday season, get together with your family to make the garland on your own. It’s simple and makes a great group activity this time of year.

Forget about pine needles covering your floors, forking over lots of cash for decorations or bland garland chains from the past. Add some sparkle and shine to this year’s chains! All you need is double-sided, shimmering scrapbook paper to make colorful homemade garland chains.

From Good Housekeeping, this idea for paper chain garland is timeless, but you can give it an updated, contemporary spin. A 12 x 12-inch page of decorative scrapbook paper will yield two dozen 6 x 1-inch strips of paper you can use to create your garland.

Cut the strips, and then staple the bands to create interlocking circles. Alternate the patterns or colors as you work for creative results that will be off the chain!

Try these recipes for a Sunday dinner

Crockpot chicken and dumplings
Mexican chorizo, lentil and tomato soup
Baked shells with winter squash
Creamy chicken and wild rice casserole

Vickers report to be accepted to prevent bank bailouts – Vince Cable

Separation of banks' retail and investment arms by 2019 part of reform to ensure taxpayers never again pay for 'casino banking'

George Osborne and Vince Cable will push ahead with plans to prevent future state bailouts of the banking industry by separating high-street lenders from "casino" investment banking.

Amid tension in the coalition over David Cameron's handling of the euro crisis, the chancellor and business secretary will present a united front on Monday, backing a report by Sir John Vickers's independent commission on banking that proposed lenders should be forced to "ringfence" their retail and investment banking arms.

Cable told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show today that the banking industry was set for "big structural reform". "The government is going to launch this initiative on the banks, accepting in full the Vickers commission," he said. "We're going to proceed with the separation of the banks – the casinos and the retail, business lending parts of the banks ... Moreover we're going to get on with it. Both the primary and secondary legislation is going to be completed within this parliament. It's got to be done. We can't have a position where the big banks are too big to fail."

When the commission's recommendations were announced in September, the chancellor promised that legislation would be passed before the next parliament, but added that he would also stick to the time frame set out by Vickers, who argued banks needed until 2019 for full adoption of the plans. The date coincides with deadlines for further international banking regulations.

The proposals also do not go as far as the full-scale split between high street banks and investment banks, which Cable had called for in opposition. However, the commission is convinced that ringfencing – which forces the banks to put high-street banking into a separate legal subsidiary that will have to hold capital of at least 10% – is a more practical way of ensuring there will never be another taxpayer bailout of banks.

However, there are differing views, many contained in a broad collection of essays on the report, recently published by the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation thinktank. One, written by Stani Yassukovich, a former investment banker and one-time head of the predecessor to the Financial Services Authority, the Securities and Futures Authority, argues: "Following publication, we can expect the lobbying [of government by the banks] to reach fever pitch. Of course, in the real world, one would expect the views of those responsible for the mess prompting the reform to be heavily discounted by those responsible for executing the reform. But politics and the real world have little in common. Since the political class has a lamentable lack of understanding of how finance actually works, it is forced to rely on advice from roughly the same crew that sank the ship in the first place, in determining how the ship should be remodelled".

The preparation of a green and then a white paper is expected to take several months, so bankers are expected to launch fresh attempts to persuade the government to soften some of the recommendations, which also include plans to force banks to set aside more cash to cushion the blow of potential losses or future financial crises. One of the most contentious areas is the flexibility around what sits inside the ringfence, which Osborne is not expected to spell out in his statement.

Vickers is clear that deposits and overdrafts of retail customers and small businesses should be inside, while wholesale and investment banking operations, such as derivatives and trading activities, will be outside. Even so, it looks as though it will be up to the banks to decide whether to put their large, non-financial, corporate clients inside the ringfence.

The banks say they are braced for the government to implement the plans but argue that the estimated costs, of £4bn to £7bn, are too low, and could be closer to £12bn. The new legislation is also expected to heighten suggestions from banks, particularly HSBC, that they might move their head offices away from London, with the implied threat of fewer UK jobs and tax revenues.

The independent commission on banking was chaired by Vickers, a former head of the Office of Fair Trading, and was set up by the government last year to conduct a full review of the sector after the financial crisis four years ago left banks including Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds needing bailouts.

5 mins: The referee's next decision, to overrule his linesman and deny Liverpool a corner, is a silly one.

3 mins: Suárez questions a refereeing decision for the first time. Not the last, I'd wager. Anyway, he was offside.

2 mins: Charlie Adam brings Delfouneso down from behind. A silly tackle, and probably deserving of a yellow card. He doesn't get one, mind. Petrov's shot from the resulting free-kick is saved with only mild discomfort.

1 min: Peeeeeeeep! They're off. See, I told you.

2.04pm: The players are out, they've shaken hands and tossed coins, so action is really very imminent indeed.

2.03pm: "Good evening. I will hazard a guess that the two sides who have been fouled fewer than Villa are Stoke and Manchester City. Stoke are too big to foul whereas City are too fast," writes Math Wiliam. "Posting all those wonderful 'Pool-Villa goals may be a bad idea you know, have a look at this debacle. The FA thinks that it's both reasonable and within their interests to force YouTube to take down the best goals seen in the Premier League. And they are of course correct, I am definitely going out to buy those goals on DVD right now. Well, right after this." Glad you brought that up, Math. Why the Premier League thinks it's a good idea to stop everyone from seeing the finest moments of Premier League past, when they're making no effort to bring anyone those moments themselves, is beyond me. They are idiots, and don't deserve our attention. And you've got one of your two guesses right: Man City are the second least fouled side in the Premier League. The No1s are miles ahead. Or behind.

2.00pm: Apologies for the lack of team-sheet analysis. Villa are without Bent and Agbonlahor, which has got to hurt; Liverpool have given Jonjo Shelvey a first start since the premature end of his loan spell at Blackpool, where he excelled. "Jordon [Henderson] and Jonjo in midfield seems a bit risky to me. But in Kenny we trust," writes Douglas Fenech.

1.50pm: Some statistics: Villa have had the fewest shots (124) and the fewest shots on target (45) in the Premier League. Their players have also been fouled 146 times, which is fewer than every other side in the division bar two. So my challenge to you: guess the two.

1.42pm: I've got the teams!
Aston Villa: Guzan, Hutton, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Albrighton, Delph, Petrov, N'Zogbia, Heskey, Delfouneso. Subs: Marshall, Clark, Cuellar, Bannan, Weimann, Johnson, Burke.
Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Jose Enriqué,
Bellamy, Adam, Shelvey, Henderson, Downing, Suarez. Subs: Doni, Carroll, Maxi, Coates, Kuyt, Carragher, Kelly.
Referee: Peter Walton (Northamptonshire).

Preamble: Aston Villa must carry particularly good memories for Liverpool fans. I'm not even a Liverpool fan, but I can remember half a dozen stonking moments between these two clubs. Robbie Fowler had some particularly good days against them: this has to be one of his great ever goals, but then the man himself rated this his all-time No4, and this was a decent hat-trick against a previously unbeaten Villa (in November!), Gérard Houllier's first win in sole charge. That hat-trick, though, wasn't as good as this one, mind, when Villa had the misfortune of coming up against Ian Rush on a good day, in 1984. Here's a stonking John Barnes header, from the days when Liverpool looked great against pretty much everyone, and a slightly fortunate 3-2 win against Villa, then European champions, in 1982 (revenge, perhaps, for this defeat the previous year).
Then of course there's Ronnie Rosenthal (Liverpool lost 4-2 that day, with Dean Saunders, who they'd only just sold to Villa and was making his home debut, scoring two).

It's perhaps no surprise, given the one-sided flood of memories, to learn that since the advent of the Premier League Liverpool have taken more points from Villa than any other club. But it's not all one-way traffic, and Villa won this fixture on the last day of last season (and promptly sold the scorer of the winning goal, Stewart Downing, to Liverpool).

So what absolute stonkers has my selective memory filtered out?

Demonstrations spread to capital of oil-producing Mangistau region after violence which official account says has killed 12

Protests in Kazakhstan's oil-producing Mangistau region, unprecedented in the central Asian state's recent history, spread on Sunday to the regional capital, where hundreds of angry demonstrators faced reinforced police troops.

Late on Saturday, one person was killed and 11 people were wounded in a clash with police in the village of Shetpe, bringing the total official death toll in the western region to 12 and the number of wounded to nearly 100.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has ruled the vast country since the Soviet era, declared a 20-day state of emergency on Saturday in the oil city of Zhanaozen, in the same region, after at least 11 people were killed there in violence that broke out on Friday.

Public protests are rare in Kazakhstan, central Asia's largest economy and biggest oil producer, where Nazarbayev tolerates little dissent and puts stability before democratic freedoms.

The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe said it was worried by the confirmed death toll and urged the Kazakh authorities to use force proportionately, respect human rights and hold a transparent investigation.

On Sunday morning, around 500 angry protesters gathered near the main square of Aktau, a city of 160,000 on the Caspian Sea, some 1,600 miles south-west of the capital, Astana.

Braving biting frost, they faced a large force of black-clad riot police holding shields. Some policemen were armed with automatic rifles.

"Take the troops out of Mangistau!" read a long banner in Kazakh held by a dozen protesters.

One protester, Sarsekesh Bairbekov, said he had been fired by oil firm Karazhanbasmunai (KBM) in May. "I worked there for 20 years. I was a welder and lost an eye," the 58-year-old said. His wage was 120,000 tenge (£520) before he was fired.

KBM is jointly owned by London-listed KazMunaiGas Exploration Production and CITIC, China's biggest state investment company.

"We want them to take away the troops," Bairbekov said, referring to the state of emergency imposed in Zhanaozen after the riots. "They killed local people," he added, still wearing maroon and blue KBM overalls.

Many protesters called into question the official death toll announced after the riots in Zhanaozen.

One oil worker, who declined to be named, said he had just visited a blood donor centre in Aktau. "It is working round-the-clock. If only 10 people were killed, why is it working round-the-clock?" he asked.

Nurlan Mukhanov, deputy chief doctor at the Mangistau regional hospital in Aktau, said 35 wounded had been brought from Zhanaozen and another three from Shetpe.

"The majority have gunshot wounds," Mukhanov said. "We should be ready for any situation."

A large group of people supporting Zhanaozen protesters stopped a train carrying more than 300 passengers on Saturday, the Kazakh prosecutor general's office said in a statement.

Most later left but some 50 "hooligans" set the diesel locomotive on fire and moved into the nearby village of Shetpe, setting the New Year tree on fire, smashing shop windows and throwing petrol bombs at police, the statement said.

"Taking into account the fact that the hooligans presented a real threat to the life and health of peaceful citizens and policemen, the latter were forced to use weapons," it said.

One of the 12 people brought to a local hospital with gunshot wounds died later, the statement said.

In Aktau, numerous splashy posters of Nazarbayev's Nur Otan ruling party dot the dusty streets, which are lined by green and white painted Soviet-era apartment blocks.

"The authorities don't really know what is happening in their own home," said Ivan Rabayev, a 74-year-old retired construction worker. "Kazakhs are shooting Kazakhs."

The riots began on Friday when sacked oil workers and sympathisers stormed a stage erected for an independence day party and smashed sound equipment in central Zhanaozen, a city of some 90,000 people.

They later set fire to the city hall, the headquarters of a local oil company, a hotel and dozens of other buildings, including trade centres and houses. They also burned cars and buses and plundered cash machines.

The clashes soured national celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union and unnerved a government focused on stability and economic growth. State-controlled KazMunaiGas EP sacked 989 workers in Zhanaozen after staff went on strike for better pay and conditions in May. It said 2,500 people were on strike at the height of the dispute, but representatives of the striking workers have put the maximum number at almost 16,000.

One sacked oilman, who declined to be named, said: "People have been on strike for seven months and the authorities are saying that hooligans and alcoholics are causing this trouble. It's all lies."
