Jessica Lange and longtime partner Sam Shepard have separated.
The actress and the playwright/actor ended their romantic relationship over two years ago, Lange's publicist, Carrie Gordon, told People Monday.
"They both are pursuing independent lives," an unnamed source close to the former couple divulged to the weekly.
In confirming the long-ago breakup, Gordon declined to give a reason for the split or offer an explanation as to why it hasn't been reported until now.
Lange won Academy Awards for her roles in Tootsie and Blue Sky. Shepard's play Buried Child won a Pulitzer Prize.
Lange and Shepard began living together in 1982. The have two adult children: 25-year-old daughter Hannah and son Samuel, 24.
Turns out, longtime Hollywood couples part company more often than you might think.
Just a few days before Christmas in 2009, May-December lovers Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins announced that they were calling it quits after 23 years and two sons together.
The May-December couple first met while shooting the Kevin Costner baseball classic Bull Durham in the mid-1980s. They, like Jessica and Sam, went on to become one of Tinseltown's most beloved couples, though they never wed.
Lange, 62, was nominated for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards last week for her role as Constance on the TV drama American Horror Story.
She will be seen next in The Vow, co-starring Rachel McAdams. The movie opens in February.
Shepard, 68, has several projects lined up for 2012, including the Brad Pitt film Cogan's Trade.
Lange was formerly married to ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. Shepard was previously wed to actress O-Lan Jones.
